Copying Course Content
Instructors who have created content in a previous semester’s Blackboard course site are able to copy and re-use that content in the current semester’s course site. Instructors can also copy content within a particular course site.
Options for copying course content:
- Copy a single item or folder within Blackboard
- Copy an entire content area, such as Course Information or Course Documents
- Copy an entire course site including assignments and tests
- Copy an entire course site excluding assignments and tests
Copy a single item or folder within Blackboard
These are step-by-step instructions on how to copy a selected single item from one course to another or within a course. If you would like to copy entire content areas (e.g., Course Information, Course Documents) of one course site into another, please refer to these instructions.
- Go to either the Control Panel or Edit View and locate the Content Areas containing the item or folder you wish to copy.
- Click the Copy button next to the item or folder.
- The Copy and Move page will appear. By default, the Destination Course is the course site you are currently viewing. If you want to move the item to another area within your current course, leave the Destination Course as is.
- If you want to copy or move content to another course site, click the Destination Course drop-down list and select the appropriate course.
- Click the Browse button next to the Destination Folder text box.
- A new window will appear. Navigate to the location to which you wish to copy or move the content. Click the + to expand a folder to see subfolders and items. Click the desired destination. The location will appear in the text box.

- If you want to remove the item from its original location, click Yes next to Remove item after copy.
- Click Submit.
- You have now successfully copied or moved an item.
Copy a selected content area or an entire course
These are step-by-step instructions on how to copy a selected Content Area (e.g., Course Information, Course Documents) or an entire course. If you would like to copy a selected single item or folder, click here.
- Determine that the correct empty course shell exists for the current semester. Note the Blackboard course ID (for example, CIT200.01-F2008). If you don't see the site into which you want to copy content, submit a site request. Once your site has been generated, proceed to the next step.
- Enter the Control Panel of the old course containing the areas you wish to copy into the new, empty course.
- Click Course Copy in the lower left of the Control Panel.
- Click Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course.
- In the box beside Destination Course ID, enter the Blackboard ID of the empty course site (from step 1) into which you plan to copy content.
- Select the Course Materials you wish to copy (e.g., Content, Staff Information).

Copy an entire course site including or excluding assignments and tests:
- If you wish to copy assignments and tests, make sure the Grade Center Columns and Settings box is checked!
- DO NOT copy enrollments, as the enrollments for your new course will be automatically entered with those students who have officially registered for the course.
- Click Submit.
Note that you may need to re-organize course menus (Control Panel > Manage Course Menu) due to the differences between the course settings in your old and new course sites.
