About Blackboard at Duke
Blackboard is the online course management system from Blackboard, Inc. used to enhance communication, organization and presentation in courses at all nine Duke schools. The Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) administers Blackboard at Duke, with support from the Office of Information Technology and guidance from the Blackboard Advisory Group.Provost Peter Lange explains how Blackboard supports Duke's academic mission in this introductory video (1:23 minutes) from CIT's "Enhancing Teaching with Technology CD."
Since its introduction at Duke, Blackboard has become more fully integrated into Duke's course administration with several major milestones:
- In Spring 2001, Blackboard data on two servers (one for Arts and Sciences and one for general use) were consolidated to one server supporting the entire university.
- In Fall 2002, Blackboard course sites were automatically created for most Duke courses, excluding independent study, transfer and Duke Abroad courses.
- In Fall 2002, Blackboard accounts were created for all students and faculty at Duke, instead of only for those enrolled in courses requesting Blackboard course sites.
- In Fall 2003 (and each semester since), there were over 1,000 active Blackboard course sites.
- Also beginning in Fall 2003, links to Perkins Library e-reserves were added to respective Bb course sites, in addition to being available on the Perkins website.
- In Summer 2004, Blackboard was upgraded to provide richer functionality and a more robust system to Duke users.
